Swallowing Disorders

Among the disorders that can cause swallowing difficulty are: 

  • Laryngopharyngeal reflux
  • Cricopharyngeal achalasia or spasm
  • Zenker’s diverticulum
  • Parkinson’s disease or other neurological diseases 
  • Stroke
  • Aging

The Center for Voice and Swallowing also offers technologically advanced diagnostic testing for dysphagia and swallowing disorders. Functional Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing without Sensory Testing (FEES) and with Sensory Testing (FEESST) allows efficient evaluation of the first phases of the swallowing mechanism. Transnasal esophagoscopy is available to evaluate the esophagus. This can be performed as an outpatient procedure with just topical anesthesia.
